nose.
âYouâre looking much better,â he said as I de-layered â winter clothes were so time consuming. Then he frowned at me, mock-stern.
âWhatâs this about cancelling the wedding?â
I giggled at his cross face.
âItâs fine,â I said. âI thought it was the only thing we could do, but Claddach has sprung into action.â
I explained about Leona and the dress as I followed him into the kitchen. Eva and Allan were there, sitting at the table with Parker. Allan was drawing pictures for Parker and Eva was watching them, a funny wee smile on her face.
She should have had grandkids, I thought. Her son Simon had been a year or so older than Harry. If heâd lived maybe heâd have had kids by now. Bad things really did happen to good people sometimes.
Tansy was leaning against the worktop drinking from a mug. She looked up as Jamie and I entered.
âEsmeâs figured out a way for us to go ahead with the wedding,â Jamie told her. She smiled at me. It seemed genuine but it was hard to tell.
âI heard what you were telling Jamie â itâs great news,â she said. âSo Leonaâs sorting out your dress?â
âThird time lucky, eh?â Jamie joked. I glared at him. I wanted Tansy to think Jamie and I had a perfect relationship. Not that we had in fact broken up twice and I was indeed about to buy wedding dress number three.
âThe dress and the food are all under control,â I said. âHarryâs come up with an idea of finding a celebrant too, then itâs just my dad we need to worry about.â
âWhatâs Harryâs idea?â Tansy asked. I grimaced.
âShe thinks we should ask Douglas,â I said.
âHeâs a funeral director, right?â Tansy said. âMakes sense heâd know people.â
âI guess,â I said. âI just feel funny about asking him because I donât know him very well.â
Jamie gave me a sharp look.
âMore likely because you donât want to know him well,â he said.
Eva looked up.
âHeâs a nice man, Esme,â she said. âAnd your mum adores him.â
âSeems he thinks sheâs pretty wonderful too,â Allan added, giving Parker a crayon so he could colour in the cat heâd just drawn.
I fidgeted guiltily.
âShe is wonderful,â I muttered. âThatâs the problem.â
âDonât like sharing, huh?â Tansy said. âParker was the same when I started seeing Michael.â
Embarrassed to be compared to a five-year-old, I changed the subject.
âAnyway thereâs some party tonight â a survivorsâ celebration or something,â I explained. âDougâs niece is singing so I said weâd go along to support her and to talk to him.â
âWhat sort of singing?â Jamie asked.
I shrugged.
âDunno,â I said. âBut she dresses like a bank manager and she works in an undertakerâs, so I canât imagine itâll be very exciting.â
Jamie chuckled.
âWell Iâll come along and suffer with you,â he said. âFor the sake of the wedding.â
âYou go too, love,â Eva said to Tansy. âLet your hair down. Weâll look after young Parker â he can stay over if you like?â
Parker cheered but Tansy looked uncertain.
âReally?â she said. âYou donât mind?â
âCourse not,â Eva said. âWe can make popcorn and watch a DVD.â
Tansy looked at me. I forced myself to smile.
âCome along,â I said. âYouâve been flat out helping everyone. Itâll be good for you to have some fun.â I didnât think for one minute that the party would be fun, but I wasnât going to tell Tansy that.
âRight, Iâm going to phone Chloe finally and then sort out what Iâm going to wear,â I said to Jamie. âIâll be
