mini interrogation is all about?â
âYes,â he answered, turning his head to face her squarely. âDid you?â
âNo,â she replied. âNot that itâs any of your business. I respect Kevin as a vet and value his friendship, but I donât have any romantic interest in him.â
âBut that doesnât necessarily preclude him from your daddy prospects, does it?â
âTheoretically no,â she replied. âI had considered asking him after Ty declined, but then you came along.â
âYeah,â he replied with a scoffing sound. âI came along. Are you saying you woulda picked him if I hadnât?â
At first she was miffed at his irrational display of possessiveness, but then she realized it was born of insecurity. He didnât know where he stood. She hadnât intentionally strung him along, but that was probably how he felt. She could relate to that feeling of insecurity. Sheâd known it well when she was with Ty.
âIâm not saying that at all,â she answered in a softer tone. âI was still mulling over my options. I hadnât decided anything.â
âAnd now?â he asked. âHave you decided?â
âIâve been thinking, Zac. Thinking really hard. Iâd planned to do this on my own, but now youâve changed everything. Complicated everything.â All because he wasnât content just to be a sperm donor. He wanted to be a father.
âYouâre the one who chose to make it complicated,â he said. âI know youâre gun-shy, Delaney. I can understand that and Iâm willing to work really hard to help you overcome it, but you need to trust me.â
âBecause you have such a great track record?â she replied dryly. âHow many serious relationships have you been in?â
âNone,â he answered.
âAnd youâve been with more women than you can even remember, so maybe you can understand why I have some reservations.â
âMaybe I have been with a lot of women, but Iâve never cheated on anyone.â
âHow could you when you have a pathological fear of commitment?â
His body emanated tension. His back and shoulders were too straight. He pulled off to the side off the road and cut the engine. âThereâs something you need to understand. It wasnât because Iâm incapable of commitment. There just wasnât anyone I wanted. Thereâs a huge difference.â His brows were drawn. He took her shoulders in his hands. âI know what I want when I see it, and right now all I see is you .â
The look in his eyes made it hard to breathe. She made the mistake of breaking eye contact to focus on his mouth and immediately recalled the feel of it on hers. She wanted desperately to feel it again . . . and a whole lot more, but feared that acting on that desire could only lead to trouble. Big trouble.
âYou say all the right words, but words donât really mean anything,â she said. âIf we agreed to have a baby together, how can I know youâll stick around?â
âBecause I believe in promises and I keep my word. If I tell you Iâm gonna be here, Iâm gonna damned well be here. Once I set a course, I believe in staying on it.â
âBut what if itâs not the right one?â she asked. âWould you just keep going in the wrong direction?â
âProbably,â he admitted dryly. âItâs that bullheaded quality I mentioned before.â He tipped her chin up to meet his gaze and continued softly, âI think we could be damned good together. I donât understand why youâre fighting it so hard.â
âBecause Iâm scared, Zac. I want to believe this could work between us, but what if it doesnât? Iâve had my heart broken once, and once was enough. I just donât want to go through that again.â
âYou think Iâm not scared
