actually commissioning me to come up with a menâs shower gel. We burst in at about nine, brimming with chatter, only to find Mum sitting at the kitchen table, staring into space, looking ragged with exhaustion.
âI knew I should have stayed to help you,â I cried.
âDonât be silly, love,â she said. âIâm just tired, thatâs all. Iâm glad you went. Now, tell me everything.â
Grace started talking through our new orders and what Massimo had said, and Saff asked if there was any supper going.
âOh, I havenât even thought about eating,â Mum said. âSorry, girls. I donât have anything in. I could probably rustle up a bit of cheese on toastâ¦â
âYou stay there,â I told her. âSaff can get it.â
âOh, yeah. Saff can get it!â my sister grumbled, opening the fridge anyway. âSaff whoâs been busy all day, looking fabulous and being irresistible to boys! Iâm the one whoâs exhausted.â
Mum barely smiled at that, and then only nodded along as Grace told her about the shower gel costings. Although my sisters seemed to have taken it at face value that she was just tired, I started to get an uneasy feeling. For a start, she looked all pale and trembly, and like she was about to burst into tears at any minute.
âMum, if something was up, youâd tell us, wouldnât you?â I said.
She sighed deeply and tears sprang into her eyes. âOh, Abbieâ¦I was hoping to keep it to myself until tomorrow at least, butâ¦I saw this today.â
She pushed the local free paper towards me. It was folded over at a full-page advert for the Haven Spa. âHalf-price body treatments, plus free manicure,â I read, and nearly choked with shock.
Saff gasped. âTheyâve copied our promotion, pretty much!â she cried. âRight, this is war! Letâs match their offer. No, letâs better it! That will show them where they can stick theirââ
âWe canât afford to,â Grace cut in.
âAnyway, theyâve done a price promise,â I said, handing the paper across to her. âJust to make sure we can never compete with them on that score. Look.â
Saff read, â We pledge to match or better the prices of treatments and the promotional offers of any other beauty establishment within a three-mile radius. Theyâre talking about us ! This is a direct attack!â she cried. âWe need to go down there, Mum. Have a word with them. They canât do this!â
Mum sighed. âI understand how you feel, love,â she said, âbut technically they havenât done anything wrong. Theyâre just promoting their business.â
Saff sighed sharply and was about to say something else when Mum added, âAnd weâll just look silly if we go and fling accusations about. Promise me youâll stay well away from there.â
Saff didnât answer for ages, but Mum kept eyeballing her until she huffed, âFine. I promise.â But she didnât look at all pleased about it.
âThe paper came out on Thursday, so that explains what happened,â Mum said then.
âWhat? What happened?â Grace demanded.
Mum sighed. âThings went very quiet on the offer front on Thursday afternoon and it was the same on Friday. I didnât say anything to you girls, because I thought it was just a lull, and that lots of people would walk in without booking. But they didnât.â
âBut you said things had been fine!â I cried. âI asked you, both nights, and you said!â
âWhy didnât you tell us?â Grace murmured.
âI would have, but I didnât think there was anything to worry about,â Mum insisted. âI thought Iâd have a busy Saturday, with Emily rushed off her feet doing the free manicures, and everything would be fine. But only one more lady rang up to book in on
