what?
âWhy did you do it, Maggie?â I ask.
She stops in the doorway. Sheâs breathing fast. âYouâve seen how it works. Kris and Sabrina can say and do whatever the hell they want, and no one calls them on it. Youâre never going to shine as long as theyâre the ones in the spotlight. But now Kris is gone.â
âYou stupid woman,â snarls Brian, fist pressed tight against his forehead. âYou have no idea what youâre talking about.â
âOh really? Then why was I at the party in the first place, huh? Because you two were busy selling your souls to get Kris freakinâ Ellis to sign on, thatâs why.â She turns to me, her expression different, pleading. âDo you really believe Kris was in this thing to play second string to you? You stood up for me, Seth. Now Iâm standing up for you. Doesnât matter how much Kris wants to bring you down, heâs
done
. And Iâm glad I was the one who made it happen.â
âWhat about Tamara?â I ask.
âWhat about her? Tamara lost the moral high ground when she cheated on her fiancé.â
âAnd Sabrina?â adds Ryder. âWhat if weâve lost her too?â
Maggie grips the door handle. âThen good riddance. Sheâs no different from Kris. We all know why Annaleigh left the party early last night.â
Brian glares at her. âGet the hell out!â
âWhy shouldnât Seth know what she said about him?â she fires back.
âWhat
who
said about me?â I ask.
âWhy, your dear friend Sabrina, of course. Said the first read-through wasnât a rehearsal, it was a humiliation. Called you a fucking mess. Said that if thatâs all youâve got, the whole movie is screwed. Those are pretty much direct quotes, by the way. Just ask Annaleigh.â
Maggie slams the door behind her and Iâm alone with the two men who control my future. Do they feel the same way as Sabrina? Is that why they wanted Kris on board?
Maybe Sabrinaâs rightâI
was
a mess at that first rehearsal. Still, I canât believe she said those things. Who does that to a fellow actor?
âIs it true, what Maggie just said?â I ask Ryder.
He looks at everything except me. âItâs what Annaleigh told us.â
âLook, Iâm sorry,â I say. âI was distracted during the read-through. Iâd just seen the picture of me and Kris in the newspaper andââ
The door flies open and Tracie blusters in. âDid you just fire Maggie?â
âYeah,â says Brian. âAnd donât tell me I canât legally do that.â
âYou canât legallyââ
âBullshit! She leaked confidential information. Seth told her about Kris and Tamara, and she sold the story.â
âI know what she did, Brian. I was listening at the door.â
âI thought you made her sign a nondisclosure.â
âI did, but it only covers the movie. Kris never signed a contract, so technically heâs nothing to do with the movie. Neitherâs Tamara. And Maggie knows it.â
Silence. A few words from Tracie and Brianâs pent-up anger counts for nothing.
âWe should sue her anyway,â says Ryder.
Tracie purses her lips. âFor what? Telling the truth? If we so much as threaten her, sheâll name her sources. In other words,
Seth
.â She turns to me. âSo are you willing to go on oath and say sheâs lying, or would you admit that you told her everything she passed along?â
I lower my eyes. âIâd have to admit it.â
âUh-huh. And tell me, who gets thrown under the bus thenâher, or you?â She puts her fingers under my chin and forces me to look her in the eye. Itâs the first time she has seemed remotely sympathetic. âTake it from meâMaggie didnât commit a crime. She sold information she never shouldâve had. It may feel the same,
