here,
all I could eat
. What does she think Iâm going to do? Eat this stuff right out of the jar?â
âShe told me the same thing,â said Nathan.
âShe eats peanut butter out of the jar, too,â said Laura.
All the mustard was set down on the coffee table, some in jars and some in plastic bags.
âSo whatâs the plan?â asked Debbie.
âWe can rub it in their hair,â suggested Nathan.
âStick it in their shoes!â laughed Allison.
âAnd their desks,â said Aaron.
âDown their pants,â said Tiffany. She lay flopped across the purple bean bag chair.
Laura sat still in the swinging chair. âWeâre going to
divide
and
conquer
!â she said.
Nobody looked very impressed. Laura was a little disappointed, but she knew theyâd like her plan once they heard all the details.
âOkay. First, we have to learn our song,â she said. âDo you have it, Kristin?â
Kristin nodded. She was so nervous, she hadnât said a word since she arrived.
âWell, letâs hear it!â said Tiffany.
Kristin stood next to the television. âSee, since itâs our national anthem, I wanted to make it sound patriotic.â
âThatâs good!â said Nathan.
âSo, itâs the same tune as âYankee Doodle.ââ She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, opened her eyes, and sang:
â
Laura Sibbie went to class.
Her hair was long and pretty.
Stuck a feather in her cap,
And called it Pig City!â
She smiled, then took another breath.
â
Pig City is the best!
Monkey Town is mustard!
Theyâre uglier than Mr. West,
And mushier than custard!â
She blushed. âThatâs it.â
Everyone clapped their hands.
âThatâs great, Kristin!â said Nathan.
âItâs a lot better than the Monkey Town song!â said Allison.
âItâs the best song I ever heard,â said Aaron.
Kristin beamed.
Wait till Gabriel hears that! thought Laura.
âWhoâs Mr. West?â asked Tiffany.
âWho?â asked Aaron.
âShe sang they were uglier than Mr. West,â said Tiffany. âSo, whoâs Mr. West?â
âOh,â said Kristin.
âWho is he?â asked Debbie.
âI donât know,â Kristin admitted. âI couldnât think of anything else to rhyme with âbest.â Do you think it matters?â
âNo, thereâs probably a Mr. West somewhere whoâs ugly,â said Nathan.
âThatâs what I thought,â said Kristin.
âItâs a common last name,â Tiffany agreed.
They all agreed it didnât matter. They memorized the words, then rehearsed it until they could sing it perfectly. Every time they finished, somebody would shout, âOne more time!â
â
Laura Sibbie went to class.
Her hair was long and pretty.
Stuck a ââ
The door burst open.
âNow!â Gabriel hollered. He was standing in the doorway without a shirt. In his hands he held the lawn sprinkler, turned off and pointed away from him. The water shot out. âAll the way!â he yelled.
The members of Pig City scrambled over each other and onto the bed against the wall. It was safe there. The water didnât quite reach that far and the hose was stretched as far as it would go. Gabriel was the only one who got wet.
In the backyard, Monkey Town sang:
â
Monkey Town! (clap-clap)
Monkey Town! (clap-clap)
Weâre the greatest club around! (clap-clap)
Chicken Pigs! (clap-clap)
Chicken Pigs! (clap-clap)
They lay eggs and suck on figs!â
Gabriel set the sprinkler down just inside the clubhouse door, then jumped back, out of the spray of the water. âLetâs go!â he shouted.
The singing stopped.
Pig City were huddled together on the bed. âSomebody get that thing out of here!â shouted Laura.
She was against the wall, behind Kristin, who was behind Aaron.
