with Karen while he started fucking me, and Bobby was fucking Karen, while Karen and I kept making out. Then we just, uh, switched. It was fucking crazy.â
She turned to look at him. âThis bother you?â
He shook his head. âNot too much,â he said. âKaren and Bobby been together seven years. I guess Iâm over it.â
He looked at her. âSo, how was it? Did you have fun?â
âI always wanted to fuck that guy,â she said. âI donât know why. Thereâs something about him. Maybe the money. Maybe whatever it is that drove him to get the money. It was pretty good. Really good. Yuh. And Karenâs some hot, but youâd know that. She and Jimmy seemed to enjoy themselves just as much as me and Bobby.â
âDid Bobby and Jimmy ever talk business, talk about coke?â asked Scarnum.
âNo,â she said. âIt wasnât like that. It was just, you know, partyÂing and fucking. Doing coke, not talking about it.â
âHow many times did you do it?â
âMaybe half a dozen.â
âYou always did it in the same place?â
âYeah. Always in her studio.â
âYou ever fuck Bobby when Jimmy wasnât around?â
She thought for a minute. âYeah, and I never told him. That wasnât part of the deal. That was cheating.â She shrugged. âFor all I know, he was fucking Karen on the side.â
Scarnum put on the signal light and started to turn down a little access road.
âWhere we going?â said Angela.
âThereâs a little clearing up this road, by the river,â he said. âI plan to take you up there and, uh, show you something.â
She looked down at the crotch of his jeans. âOh my God,â she said. âWhat a pervert. You got turned on hearing about our orgies.â
Then she reached down and squeezed him through his jeans. âIs this what you want to show me?â
They had sex by the side of the road, with Angela straddling him in the back seat, her jeans around one ankle, Scarnumâs jeans around his knees.
It was frantic, urgent, and it didnât last long.
Afterward, she stayed on top of him, their gooey loins pressed together, and they smoked.
She leaned back against the seat behind her and looked down at Scarnum. âI donât think you are over Karen,â she said.
He raised his eyebrow at her. âYeah?â he said. âWhyâs that?â
âWhy havenât you had a girlfriend since then?â
He laughed. âMaybe Iâm not boyfriend material,â he said.
âYou were then,â she said. âYou were with Karen.â
âWell, I donât know,â he said. âI wasnât a very good boyfriend. I was drinking a lot, running around on her. When I met Karen, we were students in Halifax. She was going to go to law school. A few years later, I had her living on my old fucking boat in the Back Harbour. Not really the lifestyle she was accustomed to. I wasnât making no money. Looked like I was going to lose the boat, and then Bobby hired me to fix up his big ketch.â He laughed. âI thought our problems were over.â
âYou never told me what happened,â she said.
He laughed again. âBut you heard, didnât you?â he said.
She nodded. âYou went to town to get a part for the boat,â she said.
âYuh. I left Karen on the ketch, working on the upholstery, while I went to Halifax to get the fuel pump rebuilt,â he said. âOnly I realized after twenty minutes on the highway that I didnât have it with me.â
âSo you drove back,â she said, studying his face.
âThatâs right,â he said. âAnd when I got back to Charlieâs, I noticed that Falkenhamâs truck was parked by the dock and that big old ketch was rocking, and there wasnât a ripple on the water.â
Angela studied his face.
