âEd had two cell phones. The department didnât know about the second until I told them.â
âSo he had a second cell phone just for informants.â
Her eyes darted to the window, then back to me. âIâm not saying more than that.â
âThen Iâm not either.â
âHe left it at my place,â she said quietly.
Finally it clicked. They were more than just partners.
âHe never got the message?â I asked.
She stared down at the table. âI heard it go off, but I didnât check the message. I wish to God I had. If heâd been on guard when he got out of the car that night . . .â She exhaled. âYou can think what you want about me. It was complicated.â
âIâm not thinking anything about you. I know all about complicated.â
âSo are you going to tell me this tip, or am I wasting my time?â
I glanced over my shoulders, just in case. No one was within earshot. âDiamond Tony is going to frame Andre of the South Side Bloods for Prescottâs murder. Tonyâs got guys in the Bloods who are willing to testify that Andre ordered it.â
âDo you have any details about what their storyâs going to be?â
âNo, but Tony knows what sticks and what doesnât. Vinnyâthatâs one of Tonyâs lieutenantsâwas sure that their plan was gonna work.â
âGod. The department mightâve bought it too.â
âThatâs all I know,â I told her. âYouâve got to take it from here.â
âI will,â she said, a steel edge in her voice. She wanted to put away Prescottâs killer as much as I did.
STOP-LOSS
I could picture Diamond Tony smiling.
Andre down, check.
New suppliers, check.
Saturday morning I felt so depressed that I didnât want to get out of bed. It killed me that I mightâve had something to do with Tonyâs good fortune. If I hadnât tipped off Prescott about Pup or the Cash Stop, all of this mightâve played out differently.
My phone rang, and Jessicaâs number came up. I couldnât talk to her, not now.
I called White Chris. An hour later, I met him at Localâs. When I got to the table, he did something he never did. I mean, never .
He hugged me.
âWhat was that for?â
White Chris sat down and looked at me over his basket of chicken wings. âI heard about the cop getting killed. Iâm glad it wasnât you.â
âMe too.â It felt wrong saying it. Prescottâs only mistake had been putting himself out there in front of the cameras, bringing all that attention to himself. If anyone was setting themselves up to get killed, it was me. Yet I was still living and breathing.
âI was his informant,â I whispered.
White Chrisâs eyes widened.
âIâm in touch with his partner now. I told her that Tony is framing Andre of the South Side Bloods for the murder.â
âSo killing that cop was all part of his master plan.â
âRight. The cops arenât listening to her, though. Theyâre still going to charge Andre. Turns out heâs got plenty of reasons to want Prescott dead. Prescottâs been a pain in the ass to the Bloods for years. He even charged Andre a couple of years ago, but Andre got off on a technicality.â
âTypical. The cops have to put someone away, even if heâs not the real killer.â
âAnd now Tonyâs hooked into the Bloodsâ suppliers. I donât know how he did it. He got everything he wanted. Revenge, supply, everything.â I put up a hand. âDonât say âI told you, heâs smarter than you.â Just donât.â
âI wonât. It doesnât matter. The only thing that matters is what you do next.â
âYou think I should get out.â
âI thought you should before. Now I know you should. Tony killed a cop, Darren. And not just any
