demanded. âNora?â
But Nora swept down the steps past her, leaving a cold chill in her wake. Carolyn watched her walk off in the direction of the road. Nora didnât look back.
âWhereâs she going?â Carolyn turned helplessly to Andy. âWhatâs happening? â
âDonât worry about the house,â Joss said quietly.
Sheâd almost forgotten he was there.
At the sound of his voice, Carolyn looked back at the porch. Joss was framed there in the doorway, his eyes narrowed and watchful.
âDonât worry about the house,â he said again. âThatâs what Iâm here for.â

âY OU CAN â T STAY WITH HER ,â A NDY SAID FOR THE HUN dredth time. âThereâs nothing you can do, and sheâs getting the best care she can get.â
Carolyn sighed and leaned across the table. The hospital coffee shop was practically empty, and her fourth strong refill sat in front of her, cold and untasted.
âOh, Andy, Iâm just so worriedââ
âI know you are. But she woke up, didnât she? And she talked to you, so thatâs another good thing. And she acted like she knew you when they let you go in.â
Carolyn gave a reluctant nod. âI told her I wanted to get a motel room so I could be close to her.â
âWhatâd she say?â
âShe said no. Then she said âhouse.ââ
âWhich means â¦â
âKnowing Mom, it means she wants me to go back and finish fixing it up.â
Andy smiled gently.
âShe has a one-track mind, you know,â Carolyn tried to joke. âEven on her deathbed, sheâd still be worried about that stupid guest house.â
âSheâs not on her deathbed,â Andy said. âDonât talk like that. Sheâll be fine.â
Carolyn looked at him hopefully, and he smiled again.
âAnd then she said âpaper,ââ Carolyn went on.
âPaper?â
âI donât know. I guess because we were talking about advertising this morning when I left the house. She wants to put ads for the guest house in all the papers.â
Andy raised his cup to his lips, watching her over the rim.
âAnd then she said âJoss,ââ Carolyn added.
Andyâs eyes narrowed. âAnd what does that mean?â
âI donât know.â Carolyn frowned and shook her head. âI just thoughtâknowing Mom againâthat she wanted me to make sure he was taken care of. Sheâs so thrilled about him being our first guest and all.â
Andy swirled his coffee in his cup. âSure. Thatâs probably it. Did your mom mention Nora?â
Carolyn thought a moment. Sheâd had such a short time with her mother in the recovery room, and Momâs speech had been so garbled, that sheâd only been able to recognize a few words of their conversation.
âNo,â she said, âIâm pretty sure she didnât say anything about Nora.â She gazed at Andy, who avoided her eyes. Then she said slowly, âI guess sheâll want Joss to stay on and finish the house.â
âI guess.â
Carolyn looked down at the tabletop. Her head ached and she slowly rubbed her temples.
âMaybe Nora will stay with you,â Andy said softly.
Carolyn looked up with a weak smile. âIs mind reader another of your odd jobs on the island?â
He shrugged sheepishly. âYou just look worried, thatâs all.â
âIâm just wondering â¦â
âWhat?â
âI donât know. Why she said Jossâs name, I guess.â
âI thought you had that figured out.â
âI donât know,â she said again. Something dark seemed to be nagging at the corners of her mind, but she was too exhausted to deal with it.
âSo ⦠what are you gonna do?â Andy asked her, and Carolyn sighed.
âI want to be with Mom, but I canât afford a
