stood up on my arms. âOh my gosh, sheâs the one! Will I like her? Sheâs not bitchy, is she? You tend to find bitchy women, Cam.â
He laughed. âNo, sheâs not bitchy. Youâll love her.â
âGreat. I canât wait to meet her.â
âSo, what else is new?â
âI have sort of a crush on someone. But he really doesnât know Iâm alive, so itâs a pretty safe thing.â
âOh? Who is this?â
I sighed. âDid Mom tell you that a lady at our church got murdered at bingo on Saturday?â
â
What?!
No, Mom did not mention that!â
âWell, anyway, she dropped dead right in front of usâpoisoned. And I thinkââ
âIâm still trying to absorb this. Someone died in front of you? At a church event?â
âYes. I think it was cyanide, but they havenât confirmed that.â
âOh, you do? And what makes you the great detective?â
âThe cop who came out seemed to suspect that the chilihad been poisoned, and I went up and smelled it, and it smelled like almonds. Thatâs what cyanide smells like, according to my Web sources.â
Silence for a while. Then Cam said, âAnd how does this womanâs cyanide murder, which happened before your eyes, relate to the person you have a crush on?â
âIn that heâs the investigating detective.â
âHoly cannoli! Your stories are always better than mine.â
âThereâs actually a lot more to it, but Iâm not going to get into it over the phone.â
I could hear him crunching something into the receiverâprobably chips. Cam tended to eat during phone calls, which annoyed everyone. âMy God, I really do need to visit more often.â
âYes, you do. And sometimes you should just come to my humble home for dinner. I miss you, you jerk.â
âI know. Iâll be better about it now that summerâs over and Iâm not traveling as much.â
âGreat. And I donât recall getting a souvenir from your trip to Italy.â
âI still have it, greedy. Itâs a necklace that I got at a museum gift shop. Beautiful.â
âThen all is forgiven. I guess Iâll see you Friday?â
âYes, you will. Bye, Lilo.â
âBye.â
I hung up, smiling, and in that instant the phone rang again.
âHello?â
âHi. UmâLilah?â
I recognized the voice, and the
um
, instantly. It was Shelby Jansen, a girl from Pine Haven High who was also a sort of protégée of mine. Sheâd been there on bingo night, as well. Before Iâd started my secret food business, Iâd done all sorts of odd jobs for money, one of which had been tutoring Shelby in English. Even after that gig ended, Shelby and I had kept in touch, sporadically messaging each other on Facebook or occasionally calling each other to say hi.
âHey, Shelby! Long time no see.â
âYou saw me on Saturday night.â
âTrueâbut I never even had a chance to say hello.â
âI know.â Her voice sounded a little bit quavery.
âAre you okay?â
âYeah, Iâm okay. I mean, Iâm not freaked out about Saturday or anything, but there is something bugging me.â
âOkay. Whatâs that?â
âDo you have time for me to come over? I have fresh cookies. I was going to bring you some anyway. Theyâre Halloween cookies that me and my mom made.â
âMy mom and I,â I said, slipping back into tutor mode.
âWhatever,â said Shelby.
âSure, come on over. Mick misses you.â
âOkay. And can I bring Jake?â
Jake was Shelbyâs boyfriendâhe was big and sort of dumb, but nice enough. âSureâthe more, the merrier.â
âThanks, Lilah. Weâll be right over,â Shelby said.
I rooted around in my refrigerator to see if I had beverages to offer to the cookie-wielding teens. I
