heavyset bully pushes her to the ground. The girl lands smack in a juicy puddle of mud and manure.
âIâll ask you one more time,â the leader says. âWhat were you doing back there?â
âI wasnât doing anything,â Strawberry Blonde says, her voice quivering.
âJust kicking dirt for the fun of it?â
The heavyset prisoner takes a menacing step forward. Thereâs something off-kilter about her faceâlopsided, even. âYou all are up to something, arenât ya?â
The small girlâs chin trembles. âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âI think you do.â She begins slamming her fist into her palm. Smack. Smack.
âHey!â Hope suddenly yells. âWhatâs going on down there?â
The three girls look up and exchange a glance. âWho the hell are you?â Lopsided Face asks.
âIâm Hope.â
âYeah, well, Iâm Realityââher two friends crack upââand I say leave us the hell alone.â
Hope climbs down the rickety ladder without a second thought, knowing she has little chance with these odds. Not three against one. Still, she reaches the ground and extends a hand to the frail girl, intending to help her to her feet.
Before she gets the chance, Lopsided Face spins her around. âI said leave us alone.â
It takes everything in Hopeâs willpower not to throw a punch. âI am leaving you alone. Itâs her Iâm helping.â
Lopsided doesnât hide her disgust. âWhatâs with you girls from B, anyway? What makes you think youâre so special?â
âWe just look after each other, thatâs all.â
Hopeâs words surprise even herself. Here she is including herself in Barracks B as though sheâs lived there for years. As though the other girls accept her.
âMaybe you do, maybe you donât, but youâre up to something. Kicking at the dirt. Searching in the gardens. Itâs like youâre looking for buried treasure.â
Itâs what Hope thinks, too.
A distant whistle shrieks. Time for the inspection.
Lopsided Face gives an irritated glance, then leans in until her nose is mere inches from Hopeâs. âWeâre not done here.â She and her friends lumber away and Hope waits for them to disappear.
âCome on,â Hope says to the frail girl. âLetâs get you cleaned up.â
âBut the inspectionââ
âCan wait. Come on.â
Hope pulls her to her feet, mud and manure clinging to her legs.
âYou wonât tell, will you?â the girl manages between sobs.
Hope is irritated by the tears and confused by the request. âIt wasnât your fault those bullies picked on you.â
âPlease donât tell Athenaâabout any of this.â
âFine. As long as you stop crying.â Then: âSo your sisterâs name is Athena, huh? Whatâs yours?â
âHelen,â she says with a nervous smile.
âOkay, Helen. Then get out of that dress and weâll clean it.â
Helen covers herself. âBut what will I wear?â
Hope lets out a long sigh; she has no time for tears, even less for modesty. She whips off her own dress and holds it out to Helen.
Helen just stares at it. âBut thatâs yours.â
âExactly. Now take it.â They exchange dresses and Hope fills a bucket with water. She begins to scrub. âWhyâd they pick on you, anyway?â
âSome of the other barracks donât like us. They think weâre up to something.â
âAre you?â
Helen seems on the verge of speaking but stopsherself. âWeâd better hurry,â she says.
Hope wonders what it was Helen was about to say. âGo on if youâd like, Iâm almost done here.â
âBut itâs a special inspection. If youâre not there, youâll be punished.â
